Zoning first

Measure the yard depth, the fall from the house to the rear boundary and the width of the widest usable strip. Almost every backyard problem is a proportion problem: a terrace too shallow for chairs, a pool that eats the whole lawn, or a pergola that shades the wrong hour of the day.
Excavation and pool shell first, then drainage and services, then retaining and paving, then structures, then irrigation, then planting, then furniture and lighting. Staging the work across seasons spreads the cost without compromising the design, provided levels and drainage are set correctly at the start. Planting before the hardscape is the most common and most expensive mistake in a DIY backyard.
